Workshops by Grade Level
Grades K-2:
Life Science
Ins and Outs of Digestion
What happend to your breakfast today? Discover how we get energy
from our food by making a group model of digestion in this popular
workshop.
SSSenses
Meet a sssensational snake and discover how it and other animals
use their senses. Exercise and learn about your own senses with
hands-on activities.
Slither Hither
This workshop is a more active, hands-on version of Rockin' Reptiles,
an Imaginarium favorite. Students will have opportunities to get
face-to-face with some of our reptile friends and see what each
reptile uses to survive in its home environment.
Life on the Edge (available at The Imaginarium
only)
Visit sea stars and other marine creatures at The Imaginarium's
touch tanks. Students will see and feel how the bodies of different
marine invertebrates are made for living in different marine environments.
Physical Science
Magnetic Mayhem
What's that stuck to the fridge? Magnets, of course! Students will
try "fishing" with magnets, experiment with magnets on
different objects, and even try wearing magnets in this attractive
workshop.
What Matters
What's the matter with you? Young learners will discover what really
"matters" as they explore what makes up our world and
how it changes. Students will have fun conducting experiments and
describing to their friends what they see.
Earth Science
Soil Seekers
(available at The Imaginarium only)
Whether you're talking about nutrition or building a house, dirt
is where it's at! Scratch the surface of the Earth's many layers
and discover how water and time affect our precious soils.
Moons & Meteors
This high-impact workshop focuses on meteors and the planets in
our solar system. You'll conduct experiments to see how meteorites
change a planet's surface and learn what role a planet's or moon's
atmosphere plays in celestial collisions.
Grades 3-5:
Life Science
Ins and Outs of Digestion (Advanced)
Practice your gutsiest moves as you travel through the digestive
system. Explore the many reasons we eat and check out the path our
meal takes from the first bite to the end of the track. Best of
all, work with your friends to make an ooey-gooey model of the human
digestive system.
Floating Food
Can you build a sea creature that sinks oh-so-slowly? Test your
design abilities and learn how plankton is an oh-so-important part
of our oceans.
Bare Bones
Back by popular demand! Even hard-headed students appreciate spending
time with our diverse animal skull and bone collections. Come explore
bone functions, characteristics, and shapes in everything from teeth
to toes.
Brain Scan
Explore the space between your ears! Students will dissect sheep's
brains in a quest for what makes animals (including us) tick.
Slither Hither
This workshop is a more active, hands-on version of Rockin' Reptiles,
an Imaginarium favorite. Students will have opportunities to get
face-to-face with some of our reptile friends and see what each
reptile uses to survive in its home environment.
Physical Science
Static Cling
Indoor lightning? You bet! This workshop has hands-on activities
that show you what lightning is, how it works, and what its got
in common with the socks in your dryer!
Changing Spots
You've found the solution! Students combine acids and bases to explore
the two fundamentals that make up our world, matter and energy,
in this fast-paced workshop.
Cold Hard Facts
This workshop is a more active, hands-on version of The Big Chill,
and Imaginarium favorite. Students explore the strange properties
of dry ice through hands-on activities, and see what other wonders
liquid nitrogen can do!
Earth Science
Rocks Rock!
What kind of rocks float? What rocks are the best for climbing?
Using the rock cycle as their guide, students will answer these
questions and more by following rocks on their journeys from formation
to disintegration and back again.
Orbital Action
Gravity doesn't have to be a heavy subject! In this workshop, students
build a planetary model and visit a planetarium to learn about the
size, scale and orbital paths of the planets in our solar system.
Grades 6-8:
Life Science
Slither Hither
This workshop is a more active, hands-on version of Rockin' Reptiles,
an Imaginarium favorite. Students will have opportunities to get
face-to-face with some of our reptile friends and see what each
reptile uses to survive in its home environment.
Eye-Eye
What's inside an eye like ours and how does it work? Find out how
we "see the light" by dissecting a cow eye and comparing
and contrasting the anatomy and function of the human eye with the
cow eye.
Poke a Squid
Squid use pens with their ink! Find out how by dissecting squid
and comparing their anatomy to ours and learning how structural
differences among organisms are related to their habitats.
Physical Science
Missing & Morphed
Don't be fooled! A middle-school mystery awaits. Find out what's
gone missing in this workshop as students use math skills and scientific
methods to discover what happens to matter during a chemical reaction.
Electromagnificence
Discover the power of magnets and electricity working together by
buidling an electromagnet, creating a galvanometer, and using electromagnetic
forces to launch objects.
Earth Science
Shake, Rattle & Roll
Have you ever felt an earthquake? You don't have to live in Alaska
to experience one. Find out why in this earth-shaking workshop.
Students will investigate plate tectonic movement through hands-on
simulation, touch rocks shaped by these geologic forces, and check
out a seismograph.
Stellar Inception
Ever wanted to be a rock star? Get in touch with some of the most
powerful (and popular) objects in the Universe. This workshop focuses
on the life cycle of a star, from inception to implosion, and includes
plenty of planetarium time.
