Experience the Wonder at The Imaginarium!

For children of all ages...

Grades 6-8 Workshops at The Imaginarium
Including science performance standards

Life Science
Eye-Eye
Find out how we "see the light" by studying a cow eye. Students describe the complex functions of the eye while getting hands-on dissection experience. After participating in this workshop students will be better able to:

  • Describe the structure and function of the eye;
  • Compare and contrast the anatomy and function of the human eye with either a sheep or cow eye; and
  • Work through the scientific processes of observation and dissection

    [6] SA1.1, SC2.3
    [7] SA1.1, SC2.3
    [8] SA1.1

Slimy Cephalopod
Students uncover the parts of a squid and their purpose when they dissect a squid, discovering the amazing similarities to human anatomy. After participating in this workshop students will be better able to:

  • Discuss the general adaptations of squid to the marine environment [better appreciate how structural differences among organisms are related to their habitats;
  • Classify living things based on shared characteristics; and
  • Understand the value of dissection to learn about anatomical features and utilize as a scientific skill, along with observation

    [6] SA1.1, SC2.1
    [7] SA1.1, SC2.2
    [8] SA1.1, SC2.1

Reptile Academy
Using the "wheel of survival", students work through catastrophic events that would lead to extinction of their chosen reptile until only one group's lucky creature is left. After participating in this workshop students will be better able to:

  • Observe specimen to identify characteristics;
  • I dentify reptile adaptations; and
  • Comprehend environmental impact on species development

Earth Science
Stellar Inception
Students journey through the life cycle of a star, from inception to implosion, and visit the planetarium. After participating in this workshop students will be better able to:

  • Become familiar with the life cycle and various life stages of stars and
  • Identify certain stars and the “life stage” of those stars

    [6] SA1.1, SA2.1, SB4.2, SD4.1, SD4.2
    [7] SA1.1, SD4.1, SD4.2
